Outcomes of breathing consciously - add science references

Being conscious of breathing and having techniques to adjust your state has many outcomes and positive benefits.

When breathwork becomes an integral part of your day it can be life changing to say the least. There are many breathwork styles and techniques, some you may only need to do when you need them, while some are great as part of a daily or evening routine.

Work forms a big part of our day and can also affect our home life if we are taking stresses there and vice versa. Integrating breathwork techniques that reduce stress can be used throughout the day to help you maintain more balance. They could also complement your morning meditation or in some cases replace it, as it can be integrated with the breathing.

Note: The methods I work with in the corporate space are not around trauma release. That work I prefer to do privately in 1-on-1 sessions.

Below are some of the benefits from Breathwork techniques:

• Improved focus and productivity
• Reduced stress & anxiety
• Increased energy

• Relaxation & better sleep

• Pain management

• Enhanced creativity

• Balanced nervous system

• Detoxification

• Improved Immune system

• Increased self awareness

• Greater team bonding & connection
• Increased oxygen efficiency
• Improved blood circulation
• Team vision alignment

My experience

I am an accredited SOMA Breath Master instructor, therapist, coach and mentor.
To be at this level has meant learning the science, psychology and physiology of the breath, along with how it affects our mind and body both, voluntarily and involuntarily. It also means keeping up to date with the latest discoveries and research of other breathwork practices and techniques.

I have worked with thousands of people for over 3 years now with this full time practice. During this period I have enjoyed presenting at conferences and festivals, facilitating retreats, workshops, classes and private sessions. I also mentor new master instructors through the 6month program.

Previously I spent over 10 years designing and facilitating corporate programs including JOLT Challenge (Self Intelligence).

It could be you’re feeling a bit tired before a presentation to bring in energy.
You could use techniques to de-stress while sitting at your desk.
To help get you through a project that is requiring late nights
Maybe you want to be less reactive to those around you

Why Breathwork?

People often say, “Why do I need to learn about breathing, I already know how to breathe!”

Many are aware that what you eat affects your energy levels, mental health and wellbeing. Yet still there are so many food related illnesses and diets to help heal. Those who decide to improve their wellbeing have to shift from being unconscious eaters, eating what ever they like, to conscious eaters, eating what will bring them back to a state of health. With the breath it is no different, the quality of air you breathe and how you breathe can affect your wellbeing. Involuntary incorrect breathing often leads to chronic disease if not rectified.

The breath is the one thing that we need from the moment we’re born until the day we die. Yet many people know so little about what the breath can do to them and for them.

Your respiration is one of the few bodily functions that is both voluntary and involuntary. It means we can breathe consciously or unconsciously. Most people are involuntary breathers where their breath is reactive to the environment in which they inhabit. Which in most situations is helpful! Imagine if we had to control our breathing 24/7… We wouldn’t get any sleep at night for a start.

In an ideal world we shouldn’t have to worry about how we breathe. However we don’t necessarily live in an ideal world. We live in a world with fears, problems, distractions and demands on our time causing undue stress. This creates a system imbalance and eventually can take its toll on people producing burnout and other mental health conditions, gut, nervous system and immune disorders to name a few.

Many of us already are aware of this and can still be struggling to cope ourselves, let alone having to manage others. The company work environment is not always the easiest to navigate with the extra stressors of personality dynamics, deadlines and in some cases long hours.

Workplace wellness initiatives are often sought to help to bring balance to employees to reduce burnout while at the same time improving productivity. Nowadays the New Zealand government has been more proactive about the safety of employees mental health and it is a requirement for employers to manage. (Health and Safety at Work Act 2015)

Well over a decade ago meditation was introduced into companies in NZ, I know, as back in 2007 I co-created and launched a 9 week Self Intelligence program, JOLT Challenge, which incorporated meditation and guided visualizations as a tool to better self manage in the workplace.

Back then, although we included a few breathing techniques as part of the program, it wasn’t until I immersed myself into a practice of breathwork along with the backing science to become a master instructor, did I truly experience the benefits for myself and how these techniques can change lives.
